Very Strange: Serie A Referee Kits Feature Old Italy 2006 World Cup Triumph Logo

The Italian Football Federation some days ago launched an all-new logo for the Italian national football team. Now Italian football expert @jamestaylor has spotted that Serie A referees are still using an old yet iconic Italy logo..

The logo is synonymous with the 2006 World Cup title

Referees in Italy's Serie A are managed by the Italian Referees Association (Associazione Italiana Arbitri - AIA) under the house of the Italian Football Federation (Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio - FIGC).

The Italy 2006-2016 logo was unveiled following Italy's 2006 World Cup triumph. It was based on the 2016 version but with four stars.

Legea 2022-2023 Serie A Referee Kit Features Old Italy 2006-2016 Logo

The Serie 22-23 referee kits do not feature a current logo but the old Italy logo that was used from 2006 until 2016. Further research revealed that the whole story is even more strange.

The official Serie A 22-23 referee kits are supplied by Legea. However, even though Legea released several new Serie A referee jerseys in the past few years, they did not change the official logo on them.

Italian Referees have an own logo since 2021

Indeed, the Italian Referees Association even launched an all-new logo in August 2021.

Italian Referees Association 2021 Logo

The 2021 Italian Referees Association Logo is the first-ever exclusive logo for the Italian Referees Association. It "represents “a mix of the present, past, and future".

It is round to "represent the idea of community, of a ball, of a circle that closes". The central AIA acronym is represented with a line to identify a bridge, showing the new openness of the organization. The reference to the 'scale' is there to express "equity, justice, and a proper whistle.”

Other Legea Serie A 22-23 Referee Stuff Features New Referees Logo

Rounding things off is that other Legea Serie A 22-23 referee gear features the new Italian Referees logo.

It will be interesting to see if Italian referees will continue to use the old Italy logo in the next few years.
