Hamburg 22-23 Special Kit Released - Uwe Seeler Tribute

The new Hamburg special shirt was released today, honoring the recently deceased club legend, Uwe Seeler. It is made by Adidas and will be worn in today's home match against Hansa Rostock.

Hamburg 22-23 Special Kit

This is the HSV 2022-2023 special jersey, made by Adidas.

The Adidas HSV 22-23 special jersey is an homage to the best Hamburg player of all time, Uwe Seeler, who died aged 85 last week. It is based on the regular 22-23 home shirt, but with special prints.

Main sponsor HanseMerkur and sleeve sponsor Popp made this initiative possible by giving up their advertising space. "UNS UWE", Seeler's common nickname, is printed on the front of the kit, while his famous number "9" takes up the left sleeve.

All player numbers also have a nine at the bottom instead of the HSV logo. The warm-up for the match was also conducted in special black shirts with Uwe Seeler tributes.

The usual red shorts and blue socks complete the new Adidas Hamburg 2022-23 special strip.

Uwe Seeler

Seeler started playing for Hamburg at a very young age, joining their youth team in 1946. The striker gave his debut for the first team in 1953, when Hamburg was one of the best clubs in Germany. In his career, Uwe Seeler was voted German player of the year three times (1960, 1964, 1970). He also scored the so-called "Goal of the Century" against Westfalia Herne, later winning the German championship in 1960 (before the Bundesliga had been founded).

In the inaugural 1963-64 Bundesliga campaign, Uwe Seeler was the top-scorer with 30 goals, becoming the first player to be crowned "Torschützenkönig" of the Bundesliga. Seeler retired from football in 1972, having scored 137 goals in 239 Bundesliga matches.

Uwe Seeler was not only important at his club, but also at the German national team (West Germany at the time), where he played for 16 years and became captain in 1961. Germany were runners-up at the 1966 FIFA World Cup, where Seeler's country lost 2:4 against England in the now infamous final at Wembley.
