Hamburg Misspells Players' Names On Shirts On Purpose

Last weekend, Hamburger SV misspelled two of their players' names on the back of their jerseys. This was not a random, embarrassing mistake, however.

HSV Misspells Names to Raise Awareness For Illiteracy

On Saturday night, Hamburg played at home against Holstein Kiel. There was something that caught many viewers' attention, though. The players Jonas Meffert and Moritz Heyer had misspelled last names on the back of their shirts. The names were written "Meffort" and "Heya", not by mistake, but on purpose.

The idea was to get people talking of the six million people in Germany do not have sufficient reading and writing skills

According to HSV, around six million people in Germany do not have sufficient reading and writing skills. The idea was to get people talking, to raise awarness for this problem. HSV wants to contribute, and this was their way of getting the message across. They also said they would upload news to their site in simpler German, so as to aid those who struggle with reading.
