Donnarumma to Wear #50 at PSG - #99 Not Allowed

Update: Freshly crowner Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma was just confirmed as new PSG player, in the process revealing that he would wear the #50 shirt. This way he's taking advantage of the fact that his new club already have four other keeps on their books - you can read more about the specifics of Ligue 1 number regulations below.

Gianluigi Donnarumma is close to signing with PSG on a free. But while the reportedly wants to continue wearing the number 99, which he's had on the back of his shirt since his debut for Milan, Donnarumma will have to switch things up in Ligue 1.

According to the competition regulations in France, there are very few options numbers-wise for goalkeepers - there's #1 (held by Keylor Navas), #16 (Sergio Rico) and #30, which is currently free. Considering that Navas is likely staying, Donnarumma can choose between 16 and 30. The numbers 40 and 50 can be used as a last resort if all the others are in use already.

Barcelona, another team linked with Donnarumma over the last few weeks, would present a similar problem. In Spain, first-team players are only allowed to wear numbers from 1-25, with goalkeepers limited to 1, 13 and 25.

Only if he joined Juventus, which is looking increasingly unlikely, could Donnarumma continue wearing the 99.

It's doubtful that this will have any impact on the signing and Donnarumma has already worn various other numbers when with the national team, where numbers above the squad limit are usually not allowed.

Buy why does Donnarumma even wear the 99?

Donnarumma picked #99 when he joined the Milan first team simply because he was born in 1999.
